Job Description

The Ortelius project was established to develop a new GIS (Geographical Information System) platform to replace an outdated (“”legacy””) GIS system for which support will soon be discontinued.

GIS is primarily used to manage the geographical information of our electrical network and our Assets, combined with different layers (e.g. roads, buildings, watercourses, vegetation, structure of the seabed, the land register with the property plots, etc.). The Assets and the structure of our network are managed in different “”master data systems”” (e.g. custom applications, SAP, etc.) each of which has its own “”interface”” with the GIS system.

The Ortelius project consists of several tracks:

  • A “”Migration track”” to:
  • Transfer the geographic data from the legacy system (for which support will be discontinued) to the new GIS platform;
  • Transferring the master data (cables and lines) from the “”legacy system”” to the “”master data”” system;
  • An “”Interface track”” to build the interfaces with the different “”master data systems”” and coordinate with the different teams;
  • A “”Technical track”” for developing and configuring the GIS platform (based on ESRI); This track is carried out by an external supplier.

The Ortelius project manager is responsible for the E2E coordination of the various tracks and teams involved, for the successful delivery of the various artefacts and finally also for the implementation of the changes within the various operational teams.

The project manager reports directly to the program manager of the overarching program (which also includes the delivery of several “”master data systems””) and to the business owner.

Additional requirements:

  • Preferably an Engineering or Master’s degree with great IT affinity
  • Extensive experience as an IT or Business project manager – experience in managing a project team
  • At least 10 years of demonstrable experience in successfully delivering medium to large IT projects in a complex environment with different stakeholders (interests) in collaboration with external (software) suppliers
  • Professional command of English is required
  • Strong knowledge of Dutch or French – notions of the other national language are an important asset
  • Knowledge of/experience with a GIS system is a plus;
  • Knowledge of one or more project methodologies
  • Willing to set up a clear (waterfall) structure within a context of tight deadlines
  • Coordination between the different tracks (as described earlier and including external parties) and follow-up of budgets
  • Interest in the energy sector
  • Strong sense of responsibility, distinct organizational talent
  • Communication skills with a smooth assertiveness that is customer-oriented, both towards internal and external parties
  • Good teamwork with a good dose of ingenuity.
